Why Use Qualitative Methods to Study Culture in Economic Life?

The subject of the research will be the empirical study of microeconomic phenomena relating to the family economy, the experimental economy, the economy of culture. In the past, their visits to the field stimulated important new ideas, but most development economists did their work at a desk, drawing out deductions. In 2005, we conducted a bribery experiment and found that, among undergraduates, we could predict who would act corruptly with reference to the level of corruption in their home country.

In particular, what can experimental economists learn from the methods of economic anthropologists, sociologists, and historians who study culture? We use Schwartz values from the World Values Survey WVS and the archetypal analysis AA method to identify diverse culture archetypes within and across countries.
